Polenz had been fighting Republican I-16s led by the Soviet pilot Alexandr Gossiov that day.

Republican ground forces quickly hid the aircraft. The Bf 109 apparently had only minor damage, probably to the fuel system. It was repaired and possibly flown to Sabadell by a Soviet pilot.

An almost intact Bf 109 was a prize of enormous interest, not only to the Republic but also to the Soviet Union and France. Since the landing followed a fight with Soviet pilots, the USSR demanded that its experts inspect it; France asked for the same. In the end, besides the Republican army, French technicians were able to examine it, possibly in exchange for some political concession. The aircraft was later sent to the Soviet Union and tested at the air force test institute.

During World War II it served with a Soviet reconnaissance unit equipped with captured German aircraft, which eventually fell into the hands of the German JG 27. The aircraft’s final fate is unknown.

A Condor Legion Bf 109 lands almost intact behind Republican lines, and half of Europe wants to examine it.

[65
